Song of Ascents - Psalm 121, Verse 3

I will never stop delighting in Thee, Sovereign Lord for from Thee flows great grace. Your word assures me, "The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous." If only we could reflect on the greatness of this privilege where the eyes of the Most High is always watching over us and how it is tied to 'the righteous', we would, like Yeshua, be sleeping at the back of the boat no matter how great the storm. I've said this before and I'll say it again and again that the One who is by my side is unlike any other—immortal, invisible, only wise God. He is Yahweh, the eternal One; the Almighty One; the All-knowing One; the perfect One and the faithful One. For the sake of space on this post, I will not go on about Thy glorious attributes, Adonai. Yet in a phrase, You are 'beyond description'.

I pray that Your children will not selectively choose verses from Your word that makes them 'feel happy'—holding to promises to keep us from falling (for You do not slumber); without realizing that You also expect submission to Your commands and obedience to Your will. May we recognize that those who abide in Thee in trust and obedience will never be disappointed.

Song of Ascents comprises of a collection of 15 psalms from Psalm 120 to 134. While there are a number of suggestions as to what the phrase, “Song of Ascents” could mean, one thought is that these psalms were sung by Israel as they went up to Jerusalem to celebrate the three annual feasts that the Lord had commanded (Lev. 23; Ex. 23:14).

We have just concluded the Feast of Unleavened Bread which started on the 15^th day of the first month of the Biblical calendar (or on the evening of March 30, 2018). During this seven day feast, Israel went up to Jerusalem singing these Songs of Ascent. We have completed 10 days of counting up to the fifty days to Shavuot (Lev. 23:15-16).

My purpose of posting a verse from these psalms each day (during these days between the Feast of Unleavened Bread and the Feast of Weeks (Shavuot) which in Greek is called Pentecost) is so that we too—if you are a son (or daughter) of Israel, even though you once may have been a Gentile but now through the great grace shown to us by the Father and through the blood of the Messiah Yeshua—can pilgrim into the presence of the Most High God (for we are the temple of God and the Holy Spirit dwells in us) singing these psalms to Him who sits on the throne (in heaven and in our hearts).

Join with me then O son of Israel and let us exalt the name of our God together as we pilgrim on His appointed feast days just as He commanded. 

Song of Ascents - Psalm 121, Verse 2

O God, my Maker, how blessed I am for the great privilege You have granted me through Yeshua, my Saviour. With great grace You made a covenant saying, "I will be your God and you will be My people." I feel so secure that the sovereign, eternal, all wise God who rules in majesty is with me as my Helper and my Guide. I feel at rest and unafraid because as Your precious possession, there is nothing I need fear. O that each of Your children may enter into that true rest; free from anxiety and fear. With sincere confidence (not empty lip service) may our constant boast be: "My help comes from Adonai (not influential people or horses or bank balances; none of these; but Adonai Elohim, the Lord of hosts); for He is unlike any other—the Creator who upholds and sustains all things by the power of His word.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 121, Verse 1

In accordance with Your commands, Adonai, I keep Your appointed feast days. And though I may not completely understand the full intent of Thy purpose; yet gladly does my heart submit to Thy instructions knowing that the God I serve is eternally wise and never does anything without an eternal purpose. At this time I imagine how the Israelites, Thy chosen people, would pilgrim to Jerusalem on Thy appointed feast days. And on one such occasion, the Psalmist looked up to the hills of Thy holy city as he was ascending and asked, "From where does my help come from?" He knew the answer for joy would have filled his heart knowing that he was drawing to that place where dwells Your presence. Adonai, though I live in an era and culture so different from the days of old, my heart knows that Your instructions are never outdated but are true and relevant from generation to generation. The joyous truth is that because I obey, I find You, my living God, make me rest in the safety of Thy grace. And like the Psalmist, I too now confidently know that as I look to the hills, they are not just any hills. As I look to the mountains, though there are probably grander and higher mountains around the world, my help comes from just one place—from the One who has made Zion 'His' holy mountain.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 120, Verse 7

I think of how with love and longing You said, "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling." You spoke the truth in love but only a few received it.

The Apostles faced the same kind of opposition. Like You, they too appealed in love to listen to the truth but were met instead with plots and traps. This was not from the heathen but from the brethren.

Who was it that stoned and killed the prophets? Was it not the brethren to whom they tried to speak the truth of God? I see similar opposition today where the brethren are just not willing to receive the truth and leave the traditions of men. Have mercy Adonai, just as You have had mercy on me, and draw those who are willing to hear.

As a sojourner on earth, how I long for Your appearing Adonai. I await Thee with eager anticipation, knowing that You will transform me, the perishable with the imperishable, and I will enter into that rest that

You have prepared for Thy people.

Come Adonai Yeshua! For too long has my soul had its dwelling among those who hate peace.

Until that day however, I ask that You will sustain and keep me. I take refuge in Thee,

my shield and my everlasting reward.
