Song of Ascents - Psalm 124, Verse 1

Were you not on the side of the righteous, O Sovereign Lord, there was no way that such could have survived life in this wicked world. We would surely have been swallowed up alive. But thanks be to Thee Adonai that You not only sanctify us but also preserve and sustain us. By Your mighty right hand You uphold us and keep us from stumbling. As our shield and defender, You also keep us safe from the hunter's trap. What would we do without You O God whose eyes are on the righteous and whose ears are attentive to their cry?

But let us remember that as long as Israel was righteous and walked in obedience to Your commands they had You on their side. The moment they went after their wayward ways, You brought calamity over them and scattered them. Let us be wary of holding to the promise of Your salvation and ignore, to our peril as do so many, that we have to be faithful to our part of the covenant too. In this covenant relationship—as sanctified children with a Holy God—Your promises are hinged on our obedience, love and faith in You. Keep us from deceiving ourselves in thinking that we can sustain a one-sided relationship of only drawing from You without first abiding in You.

Song of Ascents comprises of a collection of 15 psalms from Psalm 120 to 134. While there are a number of suggestions as to what the phrase, “Song of Ascents” could mean, one thought is that these psalms were sung by Israel as they went up to Jerusalem to celebrate the three annual feasts that the Lord had commanded (Lev. 23; Ex. 23:14).

We have concluded the seven-day Feast of Unleavened Bread which started on the 15th day of the first month of the Biblical calendar (or on the evening of March 30, 2018). During this seven day feast, Israel went up to Jerusalem singing these Songs of Ascent.

From the day of First-fruits, which was the day our Lord rose from the dead, we have now completed 29 days of counting up to the fifty days to Shavuot (Lev. 23:15-16), the next feast day of the Lord. This counting is also a good reminder of the fact that after our Lord Yeshua rose again, He revealed Himself to His disciples and to many others for 40 days. This means that even as we have counted 29 days to Shavuot, our risen Lord showed Himself with convincing evidence on each of these days—walking with them and eating with them—to help them understand that He truly is alive. Ten days after His ascension, on Shavuot, the Holy Spirit was poured out from heaven and filled men and women, clothing them with power from on high.

My purpose of posting a verse from these psalms each day (during these days between the Feast of Unleavened Bread and the Feast of Weeks (Shavuot) which in Greek is called Pentecost) is so that we too—if you are a son (or daughter) of Israel, even though you once may have been a Gentile but now through the great grace shown to us by the Father and through the blood of the Messiah Yeshua—can pilgrim into the presence of the Most High God (for we are the temple of God and the Holy Spirit dwells in us) singing these psalms to Him who sits on the throne (in heaven and in our hearts).

Song of Ascents - Psalm 123, Verse 4

It is amazing how we have used Your word to twist it and make it say what 'tickles our ears'. Of course, twisting the truth always comes with a price and it is often after a very long spell of wasted time that we recognize the damage it has caused. One need not look far to see how so-called "teachers of Your word" have advocated a "gospel" totally out of sync with the truth. They preach blessing while being silent on obedience. They talk of ease while sidestepping the teaching that we are not of this world but rather need to live as a separate people who proclaim the excellencies of our Master while setting our eyes on the tings that are above. They are eloquent while speaking of grace but are deliberately quiet while preaching on repentance (returning to love and the Lord with a fervent devotion), righteousness (walking in such a way that the Messiah is seen in them) and humility (knowing that God opposes, even turns against, the proud). Such teachers will receive a just recompense for leading many astray.
But what makes things worse is when these very "Bible scholars" in the ease of their compromised lives, scoff and hurl contempt at the ones who walk after Your ways. They can see the difference in the lives of Thy bond-servants but harden their hearts to the truth holding tight to what gives them that 'ease'. O Adonai, often this scoffing and contempt makes me wonder in lonely retrospect, "Who will understand?" Yet I rejoice because like You told Elijah when he thought that he alone was left, You said, "I have reserved 7000 in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal."

Song of Ascents - Psalm 123, Verse 3

Why are Jews the most hated people in all the world? Could it be that because they are Your chosen people that the evil one has filled all the nations to view them with contempt? As for me who was once a Gentile belonging to the nations, a wild olive branch that has now been grafted into the cultivated olive tree, Israel—because I now keep ALL of your commands, including the Sabbath, eating food that You have prescribed, and observing Your appointed days; I too find that I am often looked at with contempt, even from 'Christians'. I think of what You said Adonai when You walked on this earth: "If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also. But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know the One who sent Me." I now recognize that there is a price to be holy; a people separate for You and distinct from the world. Please give me the strength to be strong and very courageous that I will not love my life above You but as a true disciple, carry my cross in obedience, and in devoted love follow You.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 123, Verse 2

I am reminded of the Syrophoenician woman who came to You to cast out a demon from her daughter. Like her, I too had no part in the children's bread. I was cut off and far away from You; without hope, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise. But as a slave-girl looks to the hand of her mistress so too this woman looked to You knowing that even the crumbs that fell off Your table were sufficient for her. I bow my knees before Thee Adonai for Thou hast not only lavished grace upon me (they are not crumbs but a banquet) but has brought me close to Thyself giving me, like the children of Abraham, the right to be called a child of God. What grace Adonai! What mercy! That woman's faith and humility made all the difference. May I never disappoint You with fear, unbelief and pride. For I know that with such You takes no pleasure.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 123, Verse 1

Because You have repeatedly commanded us to trust in Thee O Master, therefore unto You do I lift up my eyes. I know that I do not look up in vain but to the faithful One who is enthroned in the heavens. Elsewhere You exhorted us: "It is better to take refuge in Adonai than to trust in human beings; better to take refuge in Adonai than to put one’s trust in princes." I have seen the blessing of trusting You completely. Therefore my testimony today is this: "Yah is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation." Thank You for the grace and mercy You have shown me by working in me without giving up. It is because of this working that today my eyes do not look to my clever ways or the influence of men or the wisdom of this world but instead looks to You as my only dependable source of help, wisdom, and safety.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 122, Verse 9

I am reminded of the time when King Solomon prayed at the dedication of the first temple. He recalled what You had declared saying: "...that Your eyes will be open toward this house night and day — toward the place concerning which You said, ‘My name will be there.’ "

O Adonai, David prayed for the well-being of Jerusalem for the sake of Thy house upon which was Your name. But now the temple building is no more and Jerusalem is not the city it was in the time of David. Yet Your word remains true and relevant even today. Ezekiel prophesies of the temple that will stand in Jerusalem during Thy Millennial reign. In that time there will be peace. All wars will cease; and all will witness how You have always intended righteous governance on earth.

Until that time however, may I a living stone, and a temple of the Holy Spirit, that is being built up together with other living stones as the temple of God in which dwells Your presence—earthen vessels containing this surpassingly precious treasure—I ask that just as in the days of old where You made Thy presence manifest and caused Thy glory to fill the temple building, even so You will grant that Thy glory fill this temple. For You who has made Thy light shine in our hearts, can cause that the light of the knowledge of Thy glory will shine forth in the face of the Messiah Yeshua and all nations will say, "The name of the only true God is there."

Song of Ascents - Psalm 122, Verse 8

O Jerusalem, city of the Most High God! How I wish I could say to you today, that for my sake and the sake of "my brethren and companions: 'Peace be within you.' " I am reminded of another place where the Holy One of Israel says through David, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity! It is like the dew of Hermon coming down upon the mountains of Zion; for there the Lord commanded the blessing—life forever."

I long for true fellowship with brethren who love the truth and who hold fast to the whole law of God, yet I do not come across many. What I see is men willing to give excuses as to why they should uphold the traditions of men over the Word of God. How I wait with longing for the day when the Messiah will set up His throne within your walls and reign the world for 1000 years with justice and righteousness and truth. Then there will be peace. There I will find the rest of God. "Come soon, Adonai Yeshua! The Spirit and the bride say, 'Come!' "

Song of Ascents - Psalm 122, Verse 7

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Adonai Elohim who chose You as His own possession has always longed for you to bless you; and cause His face to shine upon you and fill you with peace; but you were not willing. He who has called You by name, swore to Abraham and backed it with an oath (so that by two unchangeable things by which it is impossible for God to lie) You who flees to Him for refuge might find hope in the promises He made. Like a hen that gathers her chicks under her wings, Adonai, Thy husband, has longed for you. How long O city of the great King will Thou resist Him? How much longer until you recognize that the work of salvation, redemption and restoration is completed; if only you will believe in Him who died and rose again on your behalf (and not only for you but for also for the sake of the whole world). He is longing to fill you so that within your walls you will have peace, the Shalom of God. Yes, and He eagerly desires to lavish His overflowing grace upon You, O daughter of the Most High, so that prosperity, safety and blessing will be yours. Draw near to Him dear Yerushalayim and be assured that He will in no way cast you aside, for You are His chosen one, the place where He has put His name.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 122, Verse 6

Adonai, when I consider the history of Jerusalem and the nation of Israel, I see how for more than two thousand years, there has been turmoil, siege and destruction. I see how even now, having restored Jerusalem and the land back to Thy people (for Your anger is but for a moment but soon You turn Thy face in mercy) there is still so much unrest. I understand from all that You have foretold, days are coming when nations will gather against Thy chosen inheritance and Thy holy city.

All this puzzles me, Adonai. On one hand we are commanded to pray for the peace of Jerusalem yet on the other, her woes seem unending. I know that in Thy millennial reign you will enlarge the boundaries of both Israel and Jerusalem, just as Thou didst promise to Abraham and through Jeremiah; and You will reign from Thy holy city for a thousand years.

However, I ask that in the difficult times that remain, until You restore all things to Thyself, Thy bond-servants will love You (and the city You have established as Thy own) and hold fast to the end without growing weary; for the time is at hand when You who is coming will come and will not delay.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 122, Verse 5

I am amazed when I think how long centuries before, You revealed Your purposes and plans concerning what You are doing through Yeshua, Thy only begotten Son. As David wrote this Psalm, he prophesied of the time when a King from his line would rule forever. He foretold of the One who would be raised from the dead and seated at Thy right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority; power and dominion. But what David also prophesied when he wrote of "thrones" (in plural) was the bride of the Messiah who would reign by His side. She too would sit on a throne and would reign with her Lord.

I praise You for Thou art setting up thrones of justice and the Son of David would reign with His bride by His side in righteousness and justice. For it was not to angels that You have subjected the world to come, for Thou hast purposed that she will be higher than the angels, crowned with glory and honour. As Paul wrote elsewhere, "Do you not know that you will judge angels?"

O Adonai, my eyes are fixed firmly at the finish line. I truly can't wait for that day when I too will receive what Thou hast prepared for those who love You. Thou repeatedly encouraged the churches saying, "He who overcomes, I will give authority over the nations;" and again, "I will give the right to sit with Me on My throne; just as I overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne." May we therefore have an ear, to hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 122, Verse 4

In Your eternal wisdom Adonai, You commanded Israel to go up to Jerusalem thrice every year on Your appointed feast days. Each year, in keeping with Thy ordinance, all twelve tribes faithfully went up to Mount Zion as a witness of Your faithfulness to give thanks to Your name. Seeing each tribe gather together as brothers, they celebrated Passover; and Shavuot; and lived in booths (or tents) in the fall. They recognized that Your promise to them as a nation—Your chosen people—was irrevocable and rejoiced each time.

Today, there is no temple and Your people are scattered. And though the devil has cleverly convinced people who have believed in the Messiah to forget Your appointed days and ignorantly (sometimes even knowingly) celebrate pagan holidays instead, with Santa Claus and Christmas trees and Easter eggs; a time will come when You will once again gather Your chosen ones together (even those who once were Gentiles but have now been brought near and made part of the covenant You made with Israel) and in accordance with Your promises to the prophets, they will be scattered no more. In the Millennial reign of the Messiah they will celebrate Your appointed days rejoicing and giving You thanks because of Your mercy and faithfulness.

I wait in anticipation Adonai; but till then I will commemorate Your appointed days, the way You have commanded us, by keeping those days separated as holy and remembering their significance in Yeshua.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 122, Verse 3

King David would have never imagined, as he looked at the city of Jerusalem that surrounded him, that in Your eternal plan Thou art building a heavenly city; the New Jerusalem which is being made up of living stones, with Yeshua as the chief cornerstone. This city coming down from heaven having twelve gates (which are the tribes of Israel) and twelve foundation stones (which are the apostles) is, as Paul so beautifully described, the body of the Messiah; that is being fitted closely together as a spiritual temple—His Bride.

In her, there is beauty for she radiates the glory of her Bridegroom. In her there is oneness for the dividing wall between Jew and Gentile has been demolished and the two are made one. In her there is righteousness for the blood of the Lamb has washed her and sanctified her (made her separate) for Himself.

O the depth of the riches, both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are Thy judgments and unfathomable are Thy ways. As for me, I am so grateful to be one living stone in this grand design. I don't ever want to let You down, Adonai, but choose to remain holy for You until Your appearing.

While there are a number of suggestions as to what the phrase, “Song of Ascents” could mean, one thought is that these psalms were sung by Israel as they went up to Jerusalem to celebrate the three annual feasts that the Lord had commanded (Lev. 23; Ex. 23:14).

We have just concluded the Feast of Unleavened Bread which started on the 15th day of the first month of the Biblical calendar (or on the evening of March 30, 2018). During this seven day feast, Israel went up to Jerusalem singing these Songs of Ascent. We have now completed 18 days of counting up to the fifty days to Shavuot (Lev. 23:15-16), the next feast day of the Lord.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 122, Verse 2

I think of what is written elsewhere Adonai: Better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere. There is no place in the world that can compare with the joy of being in Your presence. Yes, we have moments when You permit us to experience Your presence. Yet, these are albeit brief, almost like teasers. But through Yeshua, You have purposed that we can move past the outer courts; past the brazen altar; through the Holy Place and into the Holy of Holies where dwells the fullness of Your presence—not for a brief moment but constantly and always. I want this Adonai and I know that You want this for me too. My feet are standing within the gates of Jerusalem, gracious Saviour; but I ask that I will not be content with just that. Please take me into the Holy of Holies, Adonai. Let me enter with the blood of the Lamb.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 122, Verse 1

Seldom do readers in this day and age read Your word in the cultural and historic context it was written in; and then match it with other portions of scripture. The result is that we have misinterpreted the writings of Your servants and have come to conclusions that are far removed from the truth. Few realize that when David wrote this psalm, it was the time of the feasts when You commanded all Israel to gather at Jerusalem. Today, because the evil one has cleverly deceived men who read the Bible to think that the New Covenant has cancelled Your instructions to keep Your appointed days; these have failed to understand You and Your word. When Paul, Your bond-servant wrote to the Corinthians saying, "Let us keep the feast (of Unleavened Bread)" not with the leaven of sin but with a pure heart, many have not understood him; choosing rather to think that he was actually teaching that God has done away with the law. Few have the revelation to understand what Paul is teaching—for he could see the glorious connection between what You commanded before Yeshua came to the earth and how You fulfilled and are still fulfilling Your purposes in Him.
Oh Adonai, open the eyes and hearts of those who fear Thee so that they will understand the whole purpose of Your eternal will (as revealed from Genesis to Revelation) for in doing so they will see Your beauty and the glory of Your eternal plan. Hear my prayer, O Saviour. Remove the scales from the eyes of many and then give them courage to fearlessly distance themselves from the traditions of men.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 121, Verse 8

I thank you for the immense mercy that You have shown me Adonai; lavishing me with grace upon grace. Because of Thy holy influence in my heart; because of that constant, patient tug of my Maker within me; I have come to realize that my life has true meaning when it abides in You. But what is more is that because I made You my God and chose to give You first place in my life, You have placed Your all-encompassing hand around me. You guard my going out and my coming in. Because I have chosen to live only to please You, where all of my behaviour reflects the glory of Yeshua; whatever I do is guarded by You from now on and forever. How blessed I am because You never gave up on me but pursued me until I realised that Thy laws are not burdensome but rather a load which is light and full of joy. For far too long, because of unbelief and unwillingness to let go of trusting in myself, I wandered aimless and lost. But now, I have You who not only knows the way that leads to life (because You are the way, the truth and the life); but You also guard my steps now and always.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 121, Verse 7

O Adonai, Thou alone are Elohim, rich in mercy and overflowing with compassion. Not only do You preserve Thy bond-servants from natural calamities but also from all kinds of evil. Were it not for You Adonai, we would have been swallowed up alive. We would have been like grasshoppers in the sight of giants (things too great for us to bear). But with bended knees we come to Thee with gratitude for You not only preserve us from all evil but also ensures that none shall snatch us out of Thy hand. Thou art the One who sustains us, who preserves us and who delivers us. Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory—not only in heaven but also in the hearts of all Thy bond-servants.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 121, Verse 6

Our Father in heaven, Thou who causes the sun to shine on the good and the evil; and the rain to fall on the righteous and the unrighteous, when Thou didst create the heavens and the earth, You placed the sun and the moon at the exact distance away from the earth as was needed for us and all that filled it. They were there not just for signs (or moedim's) but also for seasons so that we could live well. Whatever You do is perfect; never to harm us but always to bless.
Yet, days are coming when You will bring judgment upon the earth, at times even striking the sun and the moon and the stars. Natural calamities will strike at an unprecedented rate causing widespread destruction. Yet, Your word tells us that the bond-servants of God will be sealed on their foreheads by Your angels so that no harm comes to them (Rev. 7:3); and then lists the numbers from each tribe who are sealed.
How grateful I am Adonai, because You have shown mercy to me, grafting me into Israel so that in the time of calamity, Your "bond-servants" will be safe. I pray that the many who believe in the saving grace of Yeshua will not deceive themselves just because they go to "church" and say "Lord, Lord!" Rather may they work out their salvation each day with fear and trembling so that You will not need to say, "I do not know you."

Song of Ascents - Psalm 121, Verse 5

I think of what You said to Abram when You made a covenant with Him: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward." The more we reflect on this brief sentence the more we see the greatness of the promise. To have You as a shield, a defender, a fortress and a hiding place is the most secure dwelling any child of God should want. Further the promise that You are an exceedingly great reward to those who have the same faith as Abraham is another glorious pledge that we often miss. But then You also told the patriarch something else. You said, "I am El Shaddai. Walk in My presence and be pure-hearted." O Adonai, our keeper, our shade and ever-present help who is always with us, how we hold to the promise and overlook the command. We are always quick to remind You of what You have committed but are slow to walk in obedience and faith before Your presence as set-apart, righteous children of light. Perfect Your work in us Adonai, that we will always remember that in a covenant, we too must be faithful and true if Your word is to become more than just 'sloganeering' and 'quotations'. We want to see it become a reality within us, a testimony of Your faithfulness; so that others can see that Adonai is truly our keeper and a shade against harm—for though a thousand may fall by our side and ten thousand by our right hand, we are safe under Your wings.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 121, Verse 4

For far too long Adonai, a veil has covered the eyes of us 'Christians' who believed that the Church has replaced Israel, Thy chosen people. Our eyes were covered from recognizing that while You neither slumber nor sleep; You do not change either. The covenants You made with Abraham, Isaac and Israel are eternal covenants. But I praise Thee because in these last days, You are opening our eyes to recognize that Yeshua came for the lost sheep of Israel; and that the grace that has been shown to the Gentiles—by breaking the dividing wall that separated the two—now makes Jew and Gentile one body, which is the body of the Messiah. The Gospel has never once said that the Gentiles have replaced Israel but rather that the New Covenant that You made was with "The House of Israel and The House of Judah" (not the House of the Gentiles). We have seen, with regard to the nation of Israel, how these past few decades has only revealed this truth further—that the God who watches over Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps; but fulfills every promise made. Not one dot or letter can pass away until all of Thy word is accomplished. I therefore ask that we who were once Gentiles but have been shown grace and grafted into Israel will honour You by keeping ALL of Your word; and guard ourselves from the seeds of deception that the enemy has sown where 'Christians' misinterpret or read out-of-context what is actually written.
