Song of Ascents - Psalm 126, Verse 6

Blessed are You O Lord God, our Redeemer, for You have have prepared days when You will wipe away every tear from the face of Your people. You will fill their hearts with gladness just as You have purposed. For You promised through Isaiah, "Shout for joy, O heavens, for the Lord has done it! Shout in triumph, you depths of the earth; Break forth into jubilant rejoicing, you mountains, O forest, and every tree in it! For the Lord has redeemed Jacob, and He shows His glory in Israel."

How grateful are we Your redeemed ones, for You have wiped out our transgressions like a thick cloud and our sins like a heavy mist. Now You call once again, "Return to Me, for I have redeemed you." You call all those who have believed in Your name to repent, just as You did to the churches in the book of Revelation. You ask that they turn to You with weeping making a definite decision to love You with all their heart; for in due season, You will then cause that they will return with cries of joy as they carry the fruit of righteousness which comes through Yeshua the Messiah—to the glory and praise of God.

Have a blessed Shavuot!

Song of Ascents - Psalm 126, Verse 5

It is evident Adonai, that the principle of reaping what we sow is a universal one and is applicable to all dimensions of life. You taught from the Mount while You were on the earth that the one who mourned was blessed for they would be comforted. Your servants can testify that though for weeks, nay months, they sowed in tears; they soon reaped with songs of joy. They sowed with pleading for help to walk righteous before Thee. They sowed with cries that sincerely expressed to You how eager they were to live pleasing in Your sight. They came to You in their weakness. They cried when they stumbled and mourned when they grieved You. This discipline went on for months, with intermittent breaks so that they would not grow weary. Yet all the time their eyes were on Thee for they knew that the God in whom they had put their hope was faithful. Right enough, at the proper time, after refining them as gold purified in fire, they came out rejoicing at Thy faithfulness and now testify how good and gracious and wonderful You are.

Song of Ascents comprises of a collection of 15 psalms from Psalm 120 to 134. While there are a number of suggestions as to what the phrase, “Song of Ascents” could mean, one thought is that these psalms were sung by Israel as they went up to Jerusalem to celebrate the three annual feasts that the Lord had commanded (Lev. 23; Ex. 23:14).

We have concluded the seven-day Feast of Unleavened Bread which started on the 15th day of the first month of the Biblical calendar (or on the evening of March 30, 2018). During this seven day feast, Israel went up to Jerusalem singing these Songs of Ascent. The next feast is Shavuot (or Pentecost) which is 50 days from First-fruits. (This year it falls on May 20, 2018.)

From the day of First-fruits, which was the day our Lord rose from the dead, we have completed 48 days of counting up to the fifty days to Shavuot (Lev. 23:15-16), and are now on the 49th day (completing seven Sabbaths). At sunset this evening will begin the Feast of Weeks. During this counting we reminded ourselves that after our Lord Yeshua rose again, He revealed Himself to His disciples and many others for 40 of these 50 days. Having seen the Lord ascend into heaven, the disciples tarried in Jerusalem just as He instructed them. At the Feast of Weeks, when all Israel was to gather in Jerusalem according to the command of God. While Yeshua told them that they would receive the Holy Spirit “not many days from now”, could they have imagined that this glorious promise of the Father would be granted to them on the day of the Feast of Weeks? I wonder if they knew that God was to fulfil one more of His promises on His appointed ‘Moedim’, just as He did on His other three appointed days of Passover (in Yeshua’s death); the Feast of Unleavened Bread (in Yeshua’s burial) and in First-fruits (Yeshua’s resurrection).

My purpose of posting a verse from these psalms each day (during these days between the Feast of Unleavened Bread and the Feast of Weeks (Shavuot) which in Greek is called Pentecost) is so that we too—if you are a son (or daughter) of Israel, even though you once may have been a Gentile but now through the great grace shown to us by the Father and through the blood of the Messiah Yeshua—can pilgrim into the presence of the Most High God (for we are the temple of God and the Holy Spirit dwells in us) singing these psalms to Him who sits on the throne (in heaven and in our hearts).

Song of Ascents - Psalm 126, Verse 4

It is so enlightening when we understand how brilliantly the Psalmist uses physical descriptions to describe what he wants to say, Adonai. Just as the Negev is a desert land that is dry, without shade or trees or streams, and how when You release the rain, torrential rivers fill the stream-beds bringing great relief to those in the area; in much the same way, may Your grace come like rain, O gracious Father as those still in captivity are set free to return to Your promise and salvation.

There are many who have believed in You, Yeshua and have believed that salvation that comes from You. Week after week they proclaim, "Lord! Lord!". They cast out demons in Your name. They do miracles in Your name. Yet their lives are not in sync with the new creation that You resurrected in righteousness and holiness and truth (Eph. 4:24). Like captives many by their behaviour show that they are still held captive in Babylon. Show mercy Adonai. Like streams that fill the vadis (stream-beds) in the desert, I ask that You bring a revival in the hearts of so many who proclaim Your name so that their stand for truth will be with courage and boldness.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 126, Verse 3

Not only do the nations stand up and take note that You do great things for Israel, Thy chosen people; but we too testify, "The Lord does great things for us. Yes! Our hearts are overwhelmed with gladness." I think of what Paul wrote when he said, "Praised be Adonai, Father of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah, who in the Messiah has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in heaven."

If I just sit and meditate on the phrase "every spiritual blessing", I could draw up a list of blessings, O God of all grace. For were it not for favour, wisdom, godly instruction, power and help, protection, mercy, loving kindness and gracious provisions that You have so graciously lavished upon me, my life would have been a struggle, fearful and possibly a mess filled with mistakes. Each day I can reflect and proclaim with gladness, "The Lord has truly done and continues to do great things. Blessed be His name."

Song of Ascents - Psalm 126, Verse 2

When Israel crossed over the Jordan, the nations on hearing this found that "their hearts melted in fear and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites." When You delivered Judah from Babylonian captivity and restored them back to their land after 70 years of desolation, "among the nations it was said, 'Adonai has done great things.' " Today too, it is evident to all over the face of the earth that Thou O great and mighty One has done great things with Israel; for at no point in the history of mankind has a people who were scattered all over the world for 2000 years ever returned. Israel has not only been restored as a nation in the promised land that lay desolate for two millennia, but also speaks the language of their fathers, and is a nation feared by their enemies. Lost tribes are returning. The ancient promises given through the prophets are being fulfilled. Our mouths are full of laughter, Adonai, and our tongues are shouting for joy. For once again all the nations are saying, "The Lord has done and is doing great things for His chosen people." I am so blessed to be a part of this nation.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 126, Verse 1

How great is Your mercy Adonai. Rich in compassion. Overflowing with lovingkindness. When Judah walked in disobedience, just like her sister Israel, You brought upon her calamity and exiled her to Babylon. Yet like a caring husband, You said through Isaiah, Your servant, " 'I was angry for a moment and hid my face from you; but with everlasting grace I will have compassion on you,” says Adonai your Redeemer.' " You not only kept Your word and restored Judah to the land after the 70 years that You spoke of through Jeremiah but You also told of a day when Israel will be scattered no more; and how You will establish her in righteousness, far from oppression, with nothing to fear; far from ruin, for it will not come near her.

And just as the captives in Babylon rejoiced when they could return to the land and found it so extraordinary that they thought they were dreaming; in much the same way, a day is soon coming when all that You promised so long ago through the prophets concerning Israel, You will fulfill through Yeshua. How grateful I am that though in the past, as a Gentile, I was separated from the Messiah, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and a stranger to the covenants of promise; I now have been shown mercy and brought near by the blood of Yeshua and made a part of Thy body. For in that day when You fulfill Your promise to Israel, because I am now a part of that promise, I too will experience Your glorious restoration of all things at that time; and it may appear to me as though I am dreaming.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 125, Verse 5

I can see two distinct groups in this verse, Adonai. One is a set of people who know Your word but turn away from the truth to follow after their own ways. The second set are the evil ones who have rejected You completely. It is the first group that the Psalmist is focused on, for he says that because these do not hearken to Your truth that You should turn them to be like the second group. O Saviour, the so called "believer" knows Your word. They are familiar with Your commandments yet they choose to turn aside to foolishness.

I take for instance that all "believers" in Yeshua believe and accept that the 10 commandments are relevant for today. While many foolishly advocate that Yeshua has done away with the law and we do not need to keep the commandments of the Old Testament, they still believe that the 10 commandments are to be obeyed. Yet, such a large number of this group do not obey the 4th commandment that specifically commands us to keep the 7th day, which is by the Gregorian calendar a Saturday, as a day of rest. These know Your word but consciously choose to turn aside to obey the traditions passed down the centuries when the Roman Catholic leaders changed Your command, instructing all men to observe the 1st day of the week as a day of rest instead.

Yet I ask that You show mercy Lord, just as You showed me mercy; and do not turn them away along with the second group that does outright evil. May they receive boldness from You to break away from the "normal" of the world and be holy (or separate) for You.

May peace rest on the Israel of God.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 125, Verse 4

O faithful God of all creation, You have proclaimed over and over again in Your word that those who pursue righteousness there is always good that follows them. In one Psalm it is written that, "it is You who blesses the righteous man, O Lord, You surround him with favor as with a shield." There are numerous other scriptures that plainly tell us that it is "the" way of life. In fact it is for this reason that You have sanctified us, making us a new creation in Yeshua the Messiah.

Let us always remind ourselves Lord that in our pursuit of You, and in our endeavour to live a life that always pleases You there is no other way but to love You and do Your will with a pure heart, live righteously with a good conscience and maintain a sincere faith in You (1Tim. 1:5). To such who do good and are upright of heart, You will do good. Just as Solomon wrote, "The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked, but He blesses the dwelling of the righteous." Blessed is the man who hears these words of Yours and walks by (does) them.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 125, Verse 3

O glorious Saviour, God who has redeemed us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us to Thy kingdom of light, I wait with eager anticipation for the reign of Yeshua, my Bridegroom when for 1000 years He will rule the earth with the scepter of righteousness from the very land that Thou has given as an inheritance to the righteous. What makes this hopeful expectation more joyous is the promise that His bride will reign with Him over the nations. She will have a body that is incorruptible and made in the glory of the Messiah. The devil would have been bound for these 1000 years and the nations will experience the righteous reign of Him who is the King of Righteousness. Come Adonai Yeshua! I can't wait for the day when I will be by Your side.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 125, Verse 2

How blessed is the man who has made You His refuge, Adonai. To such a man, just as the mountains surround Jerusalem, in much the same way, Adonai Elohim T'zeva'ot surrounds His people—yea, His chosen ones, His precious possession, a people that proclaim His excellencies. What is more is that this safety is not just for a brief time but from the present to eternity. O Saviour, there is great need for us to truly run to Thee and rest in Thee while all the time believing in Your never failing love. Keep us from fooling ourselves in thinking that we have made You our refuge while in reality we are anxiously running to and fro.

Ten days after His ascension, on Shavuot, the Holy Spirit was poured out from heaven and filled men and women, clothing them with power from on high.

Join with me then O son of Israel and let us exalt the name of our God together as we pilgrim on His appointed feast days just as He commanded.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 125, Verse 1

Trust is a word that is so frivolously used by those who acknowledge You as a Saviour, that the true meaning is often lost when they speak about it. Few recognize that "trust" actually means depending on You completely—not partially and certainly not through lip service—but by leaning on You and clinging to You in complete confidence for every aspect of our lives. It echoes what Paul quoted from the prophets when he wrote, "The righteous shall live by faith." There is no other way for the righteous to live but by depending on You as their only Source; clinging to You as their only Helper; and believing in You as their God, Saviour, Redeemer, Covenant-keeper, Faithful Father and Friend. The blessedness of Thy word is in the fact that those who trust in You are truly unshakeable, just like Mount Zion. No matter how great the trouble that may hem in from every side, just as Mount Zion stands firm forever, so will those who "trust" in You.

From the day of First-fruits, which was the day our Lord rose from the dead, we have now completed 38 days of counting up to the fifty days to Shavuot (Lev. 23:15-16), the next feast day of the Lord. This counting is also a good reminder of the fact that after our Lord Yeshua rose again, He revealed Himself to His disciples and to many others for 40 days. This means that even as we have counted 38 days to Shavuot, our risen Lord showed Himself with convincing evidence on each of these days—walking with them and eating with them—to help them understand that He truly is alive. Song of Ascents - Psalm 124, Verse 8

If only the faith of each one of Thy children was like that of the heroes mentioned in Hebrews 11; or like the Roman centurion of whose faith it is written that You "marvelled", then we would find that our help can and will truly come from You. If there was anything that You rebuked while You walked on the earth, it was lack of faith. There is no doubt that our help comes from You, the Maker of heaven and earth; yet more often than not, this verse and similar such verses are memorized and proclaimed by rote. Instead of demonstrating confidence in Thy power and faithfulness there is fear and anxiety. The people of Nazareth could not see You do any miracles because of their unbelief. The disciples repeatedly heard You say, "Why are you afraid, O you of little faith." Let us learn from this and manifest true, confident, sincere faith that we may not miss out on the great and marvellous things You want to do for us.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 124, Verse 7

O God, my Father, were it not for Your great mercy, I would have continued like a bird trapped in the hunter's snare. There is so much of distorted teaching prevalent amongst those who handle Thy word that it can be extremely difficult to discern the pure truth from that which is proclaimed as truth but has been cleverly mixed with lies. For years I believed what was preached from the pulpit not realizing that the tiny deceptions so craftily hidden with the truth actually kept me from soaring like a bird towards heaven. But thanks be to Thee through Yeshua, my Saviour, that my eyes are now open to recognise the truth and hold fast to it. I am so grateful that the trap is broken and I have been set free to worship Thee in the fullness of the true gospel. Keep me Adonai so that I will never be ensnared again.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 124, Verse 6

There truly is great comfort in knowing that when we are awake, You are with us; and when we lie down to sleep, You are still with us. This comfort is not for a brief period but for as long as I live, provided of course that I choose to abide in You and make You my hiding place at all times. What joy to know that though in this world we will have troubles, we need not be afraid because You, who is on our side, has overcome the world. Help me Adonai to always abide in You. Living in complete trust in Thee and total obedience to all Your commands is the only way for me to live in You. Please keep me from choosing otherwise.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 124, Verse 5

Yes! Were it not for You dear Father, truly the tempest of life—with all its cares and worries; all the pain the comes from the pursuit of riches; and all the anxieties and fears that overtakes us when we live with the mind of this world—all these things would have come upon us like raging waters, sweeping over our souls. We just need to look around and we see that the whole purpose of "life" the way You desired for us to enjoy it is lost upon men of this earth. They have made their existence into some kind of competition, a rat-race of sorts. They know within them that their lives are but the duration of a breath and are fully conscious that they will leave with nothing from this earth but yet are so consumed with the mindset of this world that they are oblivious and sometimes helpless as they watch themselves swept away with the current of the tide. But You have commanded us saying, "Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven where moth and rust does not destroy and thieves do not break in and steal." You said, "Seek first the kingdom of heaven and its righteousness and all that we need shall be added to us."

Thank You for the Father care and Godly wisdom that You have so mercifully granted those who hearken to Your voice. Thank You that because You are on our side we have no lack and no fear. Thank You for preserving us from being swept away by the torrent of foolishness. I bow my knees before Thee in gratitude.

As for all of us Your children, may we sincerely long for and surrender to Your perfect will to be accomplished in us, because it truly is the best. Also may we have the courage to trust You completely knowing that You never fail.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 124, Verse 4

The Psalmist began this psalm by saying, "If the Lord had not been on our side..." I do not ever want to forget Adonai, that if You had not been on my side and on the side of all who have walked righteously and in the fear of God; yes if You had not been on my side, I would have been engulfed by the torrent of evil that fills the world. I would have been swept away by every wind of doctrine that has so easily besieged so many "Christians". I would have been swallowed up alive by the ways of the world and the thinking of the world. But I thank You with all my heart my Saviour and my Deliverer because I have not been overcome but rather given the help from You to be an overcomer instead. Further I am grateful that You O eternal God has been my refuge and underneath me is Thy everlasting arms that keeps me safe. Let me recognize this always and never lose sight of Your grace.

Song of Ascents - Psalm 124, Verse 3

Father in heaven, what comfort there is to know that on the side of the righteous is the Sovereign Adonai Elohim T'zeva'ot, the God of angel armies where myriads upon myriads and thousands upon ten thousands attend to Your bidding. I recall how at the final hours of our Lord, while in the Garden of Gethsamane, He said to those who had surrounded Him, "Do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?" Yet as a lamb who is led to the slaughter, He went with those who falsely accused Him. He knew that no man had any authority over Him except that which was given by His Father (and He said this to Pilate's face). May this kind of confidence fill our hearts Adonai. May this kind of anchored faith in Your inseparable love cause us to fearlessly say, "If God is for us, who can be against us? Is there anything that can separate us from Him?"

Song of Ascents - Psalm 124, Verse 2

O God of eternal wisdom, Thou hast shown from the beginning of time how the righteous are always hated by the unrighteous. Your word tells us that it is because the light exposes their deeds of iniquity. While You walked on this earth, Adonai, You repeatedly warned that: "You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved." Yet we find that because a majority of Christians, instead of being set apart, have so blended with the world, their fruit bearing them witness; that their lives are at ease and the world does not trouble them. Yet days are coming when there can be no more fence-sitting; for You warned Your disciples: "Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name." At that time each man's devotion for You and stand for righteousness will be tested.

But they who choose You will never be disappointed for they know that they do not have to be afraid of those who kill the body, for after that they have no more that they can do. But rather as You so wisely counseled us: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell. May Your remnant rest secure in You and Your perfect plan for no matter what, because Adonai is for them, they are in the safest place possible.
